Smart Summer Watering Techniques

Smart Summer Watering Techniques

Watering is one of the most vital tasks in July, when temperatures soar and rainfall can be unpredictable. A few well-timed techniques can help your garden thrive without wasting water.

1. Timing is Everything Water in the early morning (between 6 AM and 10 AM) to reduce evaporation and allow leaves to dry during the day, preventing disease. Evening watering can lead to mildew or root rot.

2. Deep, Staggered Watering Instead of light daily watering, aim for deep watering sessions 2–3 times per week. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more resilient to heat.

3. Mulch to Conserve Moisture Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around your plants. It reduces evaporation, keeps roots cool, and helps prevent weeds. Use organic mulches like shredded bark, straw, or compost.

4. Target the Roots Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses to deliver water directly to the soil. Avoid overhead sprinklers, which waste water and can promote foliar diseases.

5. Adjust for Containers and Raised Beds Containers dry out faster than in-ground gardens. Check daily and water when the top inch of soil is dry. Consider using water-retaining soil mixes and self-watering containers.

6. Check Soil Moisture Don’t guess! Stick your finger 1–2 inches into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water. For larger areas, soil moisture meters are a worthwhile investment.
